Life Drawing workshops

Level 1

This workshop is suitable for all abilities and will cover the following topics:

Guidelines and relationships in space
Drawing with light and shade
Looking at the negative space (shapes in spaces)
Using colour effectively
Composition and the ground

This workshop builds on the skills learnt in level 1 and will cover the following topics:

Coping with foreshortening
Hands and feet
Anatomy of the head

Life Drawing is key to the looking and drawing process, encouraging analysis and structure as a fantastic means of broadening and improving drawing skills. Life Drawing enhances an art portfolio. Pose duration will range from quick to extended and approaches will vary from highly measured and objective to rapid and expressive using a variety of media.

Portraiture

Learn how to show the inner essence of the subject (from the artist's point of view) or a flattering representation, not just a literal likeness through this inspiring workshop.

Sketching and Painting outdoors (Art Plein Air)

This sessional workshops are suitable for all abilities - including beginners, improvers and advanced - who are interested in gaining an experience of working outdoors, from the landscape, in a variety of different habitats and venues.

The emphasis will be on using sketchbooks to facilitate the development of compositional skills and drawing and painting techniques.

Participants will be encouraged to make tonal drawings in both pencil and colour, to make notes and to explore using different media to make colour sketches in their chosen medium, and as a basis for paintings in the studio at a later date.

The following themes are an indication of the topics available:

Local countryside landscapes (mountains and lochs)
Woodland and forests
Townscapes

People and life drawing

Botanical Illustration

Learn how to paint plants in a botanical style. A range of botanical art techniques will be taught from loose free flowing wet in wet styles, to detailed dry brush technique. In addition, participants will be able to "get in closer", using hand lenses and microscopes to observe fine detailed plant structures.

The various 5 hour sessions will be run throughout the year, to provide a varied programme reflecting the seasons, and include the following topics:

Drawing and painting late summer flowers
Illustrating fungi
Autumn colours - focussing on arrangements of leaves and berries
Winter twigs
Christmas card designs using floral illustrations
Focussing on vegetables
Painting fruits
Spring bulbs and flowers

Introduction to Advanced drawing and painting

Introduction - This progressive course is suitable for anyone wishing to develop their skills in drawing and painting.  The 5 week sessions will take you through various stages,

The Old Masters - different eras and exploring ways to work in the style of famous artists
The Impressionists - style and purposes of works, using acrylics and oils
Developing Abstract Paintings
Scottish Colourist's
Modern Scottish Artists
Collage - using a range of materials and textures e.g. paint, paper, fabric, 2D and 3D objects, calligraphy or printed text
Working with imagination and fantasy
Painting from nature
Creating illustrations - making works intended for greeting cards, books, advertisements

Developing portraits
Modern Scottish Artists
